No Pay Today For Newly Hired Teachers

(Pacific Daily News)

Nearly 300 public school teachers who were hired to keep Guam’s school’s open won’t receive paychecks today, the Pacific Daily News reports.

The Guam Public School System scrambled to hire the teachers in the week before classes began earlier this month so that a number of schools could open on time. But the system says the teachers knew they may not be paid for one or two pay periods, because the system is trying to catch up on the hiring process.

“Even with that, we really wanted them to get paid. It's just there is a lot of processing involved. There is a lot of paperwork. There are a lot of transactions that have to be downloaded into the system,” said schools Personnel Administrator Dan Camacho.

He told the newspaper that his office is supposed to have 27 staffers, but has only 10 workers.
