Former Governor Charged With Misappropriation Of Govt Grants

(Post Courier)

The former governor of Papua New Guinea’s Southern Highlands province yesterday was arrested and charged with misappropriating government funds, the Post-Courier reports.

Hami Yawari was arrest and charged at the Boroko Police Station. He is charged with misappropriating K2,200,000 (US$864,600) in government grants. He was also charged with one count of conspiracy.

Yawari’s arrest took place after the government successfully petitioned the National Court in Mount Hagen to lift a restraining order Yawari obtained that prevented police from investigating him.

The newspaper also reported that Yawari accomplices Taimo Mea, John Honale and Thomas Kavi were previously arrested and charged and locked up and were awaiting court appearances.
